The Seoul Cartoon Cafe: Cafe Yeonnam-dong 223-14
My dad had sent us an article on Cafe Yeonnam-dong 223-14 around the time it opened, actually, as a new concept and ‘hot spot.’ I saved it as a place to visit as soon as possible, but we were living south of Gangnam at the time, and getting up to Gangbuk on the weekends was a trip. So, it fell off our radar.
On our search for Green Melrose this past winter break, not having realized it was in that Yeonnam-dong, we walked by the building with big windows that display the cartoon-illustrated interiors and decided to visit the following week.
Yeonnam-dong is still a relatively quiet area, which is why it’s become my favorite neighborhood (-dong meaning neighborhood). Pretty cafes and healthy food spots all within walking distance and that you often can enjoy to yourself—that’s the description of my perfect Seoul neighborhood and of Yeonnam-dong. I brought a Korean friend last Friday (her first time to YND) and as soon as we stepped through the underpass and into the neighborhood, she said, “Wow. It’s so peaceful here. This is your type of place.” It’s nearly impossible to find peace in Seoul, so it’s palpable when you do.
Cafe Yeonnam-dong 223-14 really is a concept. We got a comment on Instagram that it looks like an optical illusion, and that’s exactly it. A unique spot to add to your cafe hopping list for your trip to Seoul. Order a drink and/or dessert from the nice waitstaff, pick a seat, and get snap-happy. Don’t forget to visit the cartoon rooftop on your way out, or even sit up there if the weather’s nice!
